The girl sat in her room worried about her date that evening. Her head was buried into her pillow and her hands were slipped under the pillow. “What did I get myself into?” she asked herself.

She flashed back to earlier that day after school at her locker. She was busy digging into the locker, trying to find the lipgloss she had thrown carelessly in there that morning. When she finally found it, she grabbed it and muttered happily, “bingo!” just when somebody put their hand on her shoulder. The gesture made her jump and in her surprise her head banged against the top of her locker. “Ouch!” She turned around to see who made her bang her head into her locker. The anger on her face was quickly wiped away when she turned to see that it was Dylan, a very handsome classmate. Once her brain had registered who it was, her cheeks brightened and her eyes widened. To her surprise, her little incident did not send him running towards the other end of the hallway. He asked her out for a date that evening. Once again, to her surprise, she gathered enough courage to accept.

So here she was, with her head buried into her pillow and her head full of worry and doubt. It was almost six o’clock and she knew she had better get ready if she wanted to meet up with Dylan on time. It took her a full hour to get ready. When she finally finished, her face looked as though she pulled on a clown mask. Right on time, the doorbell rang and she dashed towards the front door. She quickly opened it and faced Dylan. He was wearing way too much hair gel and he had a mean face on.

“Hey Dylan! Where are we headed tonight?” she asked anxiously.

“I thought maybe we could have one of those romantic dates at the park,” he answered. They both knew the answer to that question already, because it was the same for all dates. No matter who it was with, the date would always be the same.

So the girl and the boy talked in soft voices as the car hummed its way to the park. There was a moment of silence as the car halted and the engine died. They were both starting to relax, until the girl suddenly grabbed Dylan’s arm.

“Dylan! I’m really scared…maybe we shouldn’t go through this…” the girl blurted out.

“No way! We can’t back out now. We’ll be total outcasts. This is what everyone has to do. We’ll have to go through it anyways…might as well do it now,” Dylan replied.

The girl let out a deep sigh. “Okay. Let’s go for it.” She laced her fingers between his with her left hand. He firmly took hold of her hand.

With that Dylan revved the engine and ran it full speed towards the lake until the car sank into the water, breaking the smooth and clear surface. The next day the newspapers were headlined with “Two Lovers Decide to Die Together in Lake Basson.”

A lot of people dismiss this story as badly written—maybe it is but give me a chance to explain then :)

America has a lot of standards these days. People do whatever they can do fit in and be “normal.” I took it to the extremes with this story. A made up period of time when people will do anything to be “normal” even if it’s as crazy as committing suicide on your first date. People do crazy things like getting into anorexia, which is basically starving and killing your body, to look “beautiful” and “normal”. Perhaps the idea of killing yourself on your first date to show your “love” isn’t that crazy after all, if it’s what all the cool kids are doing.
