By the name of Mary May,
A girl was sleeping, for it was night and no longer day.
A girl woke with a fright
Deep into the night.
Disrupting her sleep,
She heard little children weep.
“Mary May!” they yelled in fear.
The jumped in her bed and snuggled right in.
And here the sounds started to begin.
Thump, thump, thump.
Bump, bump, bump.
What is that?
Surely just a cat.
As least that was what Mary told herself over and over.
Perhaps it was her dog Rover.
It continued throughout the night.
It continued to sound and it delayed the childrens’ sleep.
Feeling a shiver up their spines the children dived under the covers.
It persisted and twisted and thumped and bumped.
And still the girl by the name of Mary Mary hadn’t a clue of what it was or what to do.
She plucked up her courage and she hopped out of bed.
“You guys stay here,” Mary instructed to her brothers and sisters.
She held up her fists and said “I’m not afraid!”
“I’m strong…I’m tough…I have it made!”
And so she threw open the door,
While the clock stroke four.
Mary gave a yawn.
It was dawn!
She had no sleep so while she climbed down the steep stairs she almost fell asleep.
A shadow in the dark!
Fear struck her cold.
Along came a loving bark!
So it was only Rover after all.
She knew his bark from anywhere…it was his call.
Mary May gave her dog a big tight hug,
And fell asleep right there on the rug.
There you have it, our hero of the day!
